PHYSICAL SCIENTIST February 2011 - March 31st 2012
Atlas of Canada - Earth Sciences Sector, Natural Resources Canada
PROJECT | Multi-Agency Situational Awareness System (MASAS) digital interactive topographic map
Created and implemented cartographic symbology for basemap features, designed text specifications
· organized, and analyzed data from five separate geodatabases (small: 50,000,000-1,700,000; mid: 10,000,000-
6,000,000; large: 3,500,000-700,000; 250K: 420,000-145,000; 50K: 85,000-30,000)
· assessed and determined layers appropriate to zoom levels and map requirements
· selected and applied aesthetically appealing colour scheme
· created point, line, and area symbology that functioned appropriately at all scales
· created custom VB label scripts to dynamically double bank, concatenate and arrange text
· identified and provided solutions for data inaccuracies present in all feature labels
· chose and implemented text style for all feature labels at each zoom scale and for every class therein
· attended weekly project meetings and meetings with MASAS stakeholders; provided input and addressed data issues
PROJECT | Northern Canada/Nord du Canada 1:4,000,000 reference map MCR0036
Acted as supporting cartographer on this update of year 2000 version of MCR 0036 – Yukon Territory, Northwest
Territories and Nunavut / Territoire du Yukon, Territoires du Nord-Ouest et Nunavut.
Published March 31, 2012 [http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/dataservices/wall_maps/index.html]
· quality-controlled (QC’d) and applied corrections to data in Province of Nunavut
· QC’d and implemented corrections to protected areas and parks layer
· cleaned up, organized, and classified attributes for all annotation: provided query capability, which aided in application of type style and text placement
· edited annotation to make usable in Arc 10.0: had previously been in the form of coverages and needed substantial
correction to appropriately place text
· selected typeface in consultation with head cartographer; chose text styles and sizes, then applied the style to all annotation
· placed the map's annotation, referencing 1:1,000,000 rivers, large hydrographic features, and topographic delineations; the Geographical Names of Canada database; and input from project researcher
· created graphic objects in CorelDRAW for import into .mxd to solve tight text placement issues
· updated, drew, and chose symbology for shipping lanes
· chose symbology for mines, created petroleum point symbol in CorelDRAW, exported as a true type font for use in Arc 10.0
· attended weekly project and design meetings, provided input, participated in quality control and decision-making
PROJECT | Transit of the Northwest Passage, July 2011
Created custom map for Director General at NRCan’s Assistant Deputy Minister’s Office depicting a ship excursion
from Resolute to Cambridge Bay.
· used table of GPS points gathered aboard ship to plot its course in Arc 10.0
· customized and exported basemap data at 1:2,000,000 with a 14X18-inch clip as a .pdf
· created hillshade in ArcMap; exported and refined image in Photoshop; overlaid, applied effects, and chose colours for
province polygon and glacier layers
· used exported .pdf vector layers to symbolize features, place text, chose colours, complete design, and do final map
layout in CorelDRAW
· adjusted final plot file to closely match digital appearance by plotting swatches, testing different plotters, and conferring
with technicians
PROJECT | Project Mapping Areas of the GEM Program
Created an interactive flash map for the Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) Program. Study area depicted
ongoing and completed projects in northern Canada.
· conducted data analysis in Arc 10.0; imported data into Illustrator via MAPublisher
· created symbols for basemap elements in Illustrator
· refined annotation and produced text placement for three zoom levels
· constructed mouse-over popup windows to display attributes for each project area polygon
· constructed a .css file to edit and customize surround elements including legend, zoom tools, panning, display functions, and mouse-overs
· created solutions to overcome lack of functionality in MAPublisher's file handling
· worked with clients to improve their understanding of product
· refined product to enhance its potential for reaching intended audience
ASSISTANT EDITOR October 2010-April 2011
Canadian Institute of Geomatic's Journal "Geomatica"
· conducted stylistic editing, copy-editing, and proofing of technical papers to prepare for journal publication
· fixed grammar and spelling mistakes; smoothed inconsistencies, awkward phrases, and incorrect word usage;
proofed final copy for typographic errors
· style guides used: Chicago Manual of Style, Canadian Oxford Spelling Dictionary

· removed improper and disappeared features
· updated vegetation layers, boundaries, and watercourses
· improved legend, surround, and layout
PROJECT | Acadia University Campus, Wolfville, NS orienteering map 1:5,000
